What is organic?

Organic is a method of growing without chemicals. Soil must be free from any chemicals for seven years before use. Every stage from seeding to harvest, making to use, is carefully controlled. Organic is healthier, protecting you, the environment, and the future!

Chemical color with hormone boosted coconut. Oranges grown in mulch, or GM corn, may be “natural” in a legal sense, but is not “organic.” Only color with real organic ingredients is “organic”.

NATURALCOLORS has the most amount of certified organic ingredients. And the least amount of chemicals. The only permanent hair color to contain certified organic ingredients we know. It is more natural than many "natural" brands.

Why do I get a decreased demarcation line?

Unlike ammonia which operates at a high pH, swelling the cuticle to force pigments into your hair. NATURALCOLORS moisturizes your hair which softens the cuticle. This allows it to open at a lower pH and enables the color to wind itself through the layers of your hairs’ cuticle. It only removes enough color to make room for NATURALCOLORS inside your hair. There is no demarcation line. As the natural ingredients in your hair like protein, pigment and moisture are intact. As a result the color fades over time. Whereas ammonia-based color leaves a blank space. Where the protein and pigment of your hair used to be.

Why is my hair healthier and shinier after using NATURALCOLORS?

Organic hydrolyzed wheat protein is a rich nutritive protein complex. It leaves hair healthy, strong and conditioned. How does chemical hair color work?

It is the result of chemical reactions between hair, color pigment, ammonia, and peroxide.

What are ammonia and peroxide?

Ammonia is a smelly gas dissolved in water to make a strong alkaline solution. It is often used in drain cleaners. It is dangerous. You should not breathe the gas in. It has a very high pH. Peroxide is bleach.

Why is ammonia bad for my hair?

To understand this it is vital to understand ammonia's primary role in a hair color. The primary function is to raise the pH of your hair enough to open the cuticle. This allows the color to enter the cortex of your hair. Depending on the percentage of ammonia in each color this can vary how high the pH of your hair goes. The more ammonia there is in the product, the higher the pH of your hair. Ammonia exacerbates respiratory problems and has an unpleasant odor. Our color smells of banana from organic banana oil.

What is pH?

pH is a scale of numbers used to show how acid or alkaline a liquid is.

Pure water is neutral (7)

7 – 0 is getting more acid

7 – 14 is getting more alkaline

NATURALCOLORS pH is 8.5. Chemical color is 10.5. The difference between a pH of 8.5 and 10.5 is not 2 it is 20. Jumps are 8.6, 8.7, 8.8, etc. like the scale used for earthquakes.

Very high pH burns hair, skin and fingernails. This is one reason why colorists wear gloves. It is also why it can feel itchy or hot when your hair is colored with chemical hair color. It dries the hair out. It is one of the main causes of split ends and hair breakage.

What is the difference between pH 8.5 and 10.5?

pH is the measurement of hydrogen in a liquid. A number expressing the acidity or alkalinity of a solution on a logarithmic scale. 7 is neutral, lower values are more acidic, and higher values more alkaline. The difference between 8.5 and 10.5 is not 2, it’s 20. Its increments are 8.6, 8.7, 8.8, etc. like the Richter Scale for measuring earthquakes. With every 0.1 on the pH scale the level of toxicity in hair color increases.

Why are ammonia and peroxide used in hair dye?

Ammonia opens the hair cuticle. Peroxide lightens hair.

What is the hair cuticle?

It is the outside part of the hair shaft made from dead cells overlapping in layers. It is like the scales of a fish. It gives your hair strength and protection. It does not give hair its color. Hair color is underneath.

How does chemical hair color get into hair?

It uses high pH ammonia to force open the cuticle to allow the color in.

What is special about NATURALCOLORS pigments?

Each shade of color is made from 124 – 154 top quality items, treated and stabilized individually, to create the perfect pigment. Each organic part is blended to produce natural pigments instead of using high levels of PPD.

How do NATURALCOLORS penetrate the cuticle differently?

Unlike ammonia, which operates at a high pH. Swelling the cuticle forcing the pigments into your hair. NATURALCOLORS moisturizes your hair to soften the cuticle. This allows it to open at a lower pH, enabling the color to wind itself through the layers of cuticle.

How does NATURALCOLORS get into hair?

NATURALCOLORS has a lower pH compared to chemical hair colors with ammonia. Applying heat is necessary to open the hair cuticle in uncolored hair. To get color into your uncolored hair with a low pH your hair is held in a substance that acts as a moisturizer.

Why is pH important?

It is important to understand the role of pH in hair care health. In hair color it is necessary to raise the pH of hair to open the cuticle. This allows the color to enter the cortex of your hair. But the higher the percentage of ammonia there is in the product, the higher the pH of your scalp. The healthy pH of your scalp and hair is 4.5-5.5. The high pH of ammonia-based color opens the pores of your scalp. This allows the ingredients to enter into your bloodstream. This is how the toxicity can build up in your body and lead to reactions. The type of resorcinol used in high pH colors opens the pores so much. It allows too much hair color into your system. That's why NATURALCOLORS is a healthier alternative. Our pH is 8.5-10. Ammonia colors pH is 11-13. We have no ammonia or harsh PPDs in our formula. We recommend use of ONC shampoos and conditioners to lower the pH after coloring. To help close the cuticle of your hair and pores of your scalp.

Why is NATURALCOLORS' low pH so good?

NATURALCOLORS low pH does not open the pores of your scalp. So chemicals cannot seep into your bloodstream. When chemicals get in the bloodstream they end up in your liver. The body cannot clean these from your liver. Because the chemicals that make chemical color stick to hair make it stick to your liver. This is one reason why breast cancer grows year by year.


Do you have peroxide and/or oxygen?

Yes, but...our peroxide is chamomile based and classified as food grade. The same grade as used in hospitals during surgery. It is the same solution that people use to put their contact lenses in overnight. The cost is triple, compared to the ones almost all other color companies use.

Why do you use a developer with peroxide in it?

The pigments in all permanent hair colors are oxidative pigments. This means that they need to come into contact with oxygen for the color to materialize. Peroxide's chemical symbol is H2O2. Water with an extra oxygen molecule. It is the energy from the two oxygen molecules that activate the pigment.


Do you have PPD and is NATURALCOLORS safe to use on allergic scalps?

Yes, we do have PPD, but...any permanent color that says it does not is either using a derivative, or lying.

Why do you use PPD?

To color hair you need to open the hair cuticles and deposit color. Once you deposit the color you then have to make sure it is 'stuck' to the core of the hair. That is what PPD is for. If you do not have PPD, or a derivative, the color will not be permanent and will wash off after a few days. The questions then should be, 1. How much PPD is there? And 2. What is the pH level?

1. How much PPD is there?

1. As much of our ingredients and pigments are organic we do not need as much PPD as other brands, approx 1/20th. The amount of PPD is less than 0.06% compared to 6% in other brands.

2. How low is the pH?

2. NATURALCOLORS has a low pH of 8.5 compared to 10.5+ of other brands. The difference is not two, but 20. As the scale measure is in increments of 0.1. Like the Richter scale to measure earthquakes.

Why do allergic reactions decrease with NATURALCOLORS?

The main concern is the fact that there are quite a few people that are allergic to PPDs and PTDs. Most allergic reactions occur using darker shades. Because these have a higher percentage of pigments. It makes sense to reduce these levels as much as possible.


What does hydrolyzed mean?

To hydrolyze something is to break it down with water. The water breaks into two parts, hydroxide and hydrogen. These parts have opposite charges. One negative, the other positive. This aids digestion, but has astounding results for hair treatments too!

When hydrolysis occurs complete proteins break down into their individual amino acid parts.

What's left is a unique profile of individual amino acids ready to get to work. This team of building blocks penetrates the hair better than other plant proteins.

This is key to why hydrolyzed ingredients are so effective. We use hydrolyzed ingredients throughout our products.

What are hydrolyzed pigments?

NATURALCOLORS does not have to 'fry' your hair to deposit pigments into the core of your hair. We hydrolyze the pigments so that the molecules are a fraction of the size of other brands.


Why do I need to use heat?

Heat is necessary to help open the cuticle, because NATURALCOLORS has a low pH.

How does heat open the cuticle?

Heat opens hair cuticles in the same way as the pores of your skin open in a sauna.

Why is heat important?

Chemical hair colors have harsh chemicals and a high pH. Both are used to open the hair cuticle and force color into your hair. This is damaging to your hair, scalp and health.

NATURALCOLORS pH is very low. It cannot open your hair cuticle with a high pH like chemical colors. Instead, it uses heat to open the cuticle and infuse the color. Heat opens the cuticles of your hair in the same way as a sauna opens the pores of your skin. There is no itch and no damage to your hair or scalp. This is a much healthier approach than traditional chemical color. For your hair, your scalp and your health!

Why must I use heat?

NATURALCOLORS relies on body heat to soften the cuticles to deposit the color. Either from a thermal heat cap or hair dryer.

As a result, to 'stick' the color pigments to your hair core we only need a fraction of PPD (0.06%) compared to other brands.

When the pH is as low as 8.5 and the amount of PPD as small as 0.06%. The chance of it entering your bloodstream is tiny. This is an important health benefit!

This is why a lot of clients who have bad reactions to other brands prefer NATURALCOLORS.

What is the difference between Resorcinol and 2-Methyl Resorcinol?

Resorcinol is a common ingredient in hair color and bleaching products. It is a skin irritant that is toxic to your immune system and a frequent cause of hair dye allergy.

2-Methyl Resorcinol is a non-toxic refined derivative that is more expensive. We use it because it is an effective alternative to toxic resorcinol.

Why does my color appear transparent / translucent?

There is no such thing as a transparent color. What has occurred is the cuticle has not opened enough to allow the color to enter the cortex. NATURALCOLORS has no ammonia. So the color works more with the existing pigment in your hair than other permanent colors. In some cases, the cuticle might open enough, but the level of pigment is too little to cover the gray hair. As a result, you might need to go 2-3 shades darker.

Why am I having trouble covering gray?

As the hair becomes grayer the cuticle becomes harder. This is why gray coverage is sometimes more difficult to achieve. The Natural shades have a higher percentage of base and a lower percentage of water. This means they are able to soften the cuticle more and make it easier for it to open. Use less developer and more color. Mix 1/2 a bottle of Natural shade with Fashion shade to achieve gray coverage and desired color.

Why is the color not covering my gray? (Women)

Some hair types are more resistantNATURALCOLORS does not have harsh, toxic chemicals. As a result, you need to use less Colorfix to compensate. Rather than mixing Color Gel and Colorfix in equal parts, use 30% less Colorfix to Color Gel. For example, mix 1 fl oz of Color Gel with 0.60 fl oz of Colorfix. The measurements do not need to be exact. You can use kitchen utensils for measuring. As NATURALCOLORS will wash off with hot water and will not leave a residue. Wash and dry resistant gray hair before color use.

For very resistant areas of gray hair, such as the temples, ears and forehead, pre-pigment these. To do this, first put 0.20 fl oz of Color Gel and mix it with 0.5 fl oz of Colorfix. Apply this mixture to all areas of resistant gray hair. Put on the plastic shower cap provided and wait for 15 min. Do not use heat. After 15 min take the shower cap off. Do not wash or rinse your hair. Next, mix Color Gel and Colorfix in equal parts and apply from your gray roots over the whole hair. So the pre-pigmented hair will get two coats of color. Put the plastic shower cap back on, and apply medium heat from a blow dryer, or the ONC Thermal Heat Cap for 20 min. Take the plastic shower cap off, stop the heat, and wait another 30 min without heat. Before shampooing, wet and massage the color already in the hair for 3 min. This will allow more color into your hair cuticles, which are already open from 65 min of processing. Shampoo, rinse, condition: wait 3 min. Rinse again. Style as usual.

Prepare and use color so that it is not left in the bowl for more than 20 min. Use it straightaway. This is important because NATURALCOLORS has less chemicals and is paraben free. As a result, it starts to lose its effectiveness after 20 min if not used. If it takes you longer than 20 min to color your hair, prepare another batch whilst applying color. Prepare and use the color in two, or more batches.

How do I counter warmth (unwanted orange)?

For countering warmth. Ash shades and blue mix are best for increasing the flatness of the ash color. This ensures that warmth doesn't return after shampooing.

Why has the color faded so fast?

Use the best quality shampoo and conditioner to preserve your hair color. We recommend you use ONC shampoos and conditioners. Using any product with sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) will strip the color from your hair faster. It is very important to close the cuticle of your hair after coloring with a low pH conditioner for 3 min.

Is Henna good for your hair?

Henna is an all natural hair color alternative, but it is very difficult to remove from your hair. Henna coats the outer structure of your hair and builds up over time. This makes hair brittle and lifeless with continued use. NATURALCOLORS works at the lowest pH possible. So it penetrates your hair. It’s easier for you to change your hair color as often as you like, according to the health of your hair.
